There should be aoption to mark the topic closed and a CLOSED Topic/Question Icon should be present when the topic has been answered/Satisfied/Approved/Lying Around for 10 days etc.
This way, the users will know which topics to attend to.. and there are no unnecessary posts to the topics lying around...

We have this on our list, not sure if this is something we want to do, or how well it would be used.
All topics have icons to mark about if there are new posts since your last login and there is an "active threads" link in the left menu that allows you to filter to those active topics.

how about marking the user as ACCEPTED Answer: like in msdn forums.
