Login Timeout Expired and Failed to Acquire Local Server Connection Errors on SQL Server 2008 R2 EE SP1 CU6

  • We have a SQL Server instance running on a two node cluster. It is SQL Server 2008 R2 EE with SP1 and CU6 applied. Over the past few weeks we have been getting "Login Timeout expired" and or "Failed to acquire Local Server Connection" errors occasionally.

This happens at random times, when connecting through SSMS or when clicking to view properties or when checking on SQL agent Job activity Monitor or when running a SQL agent job. It times out stating the error but connects immediately.

The instance is set to listen on a dedicated port and SQL browser is running. The dedicated port and UDP port 1434 is open as well.

We ran a perfmon and did not find high usage of CPU and or Memory.

I am requesting any advice or next steps I can take to tackle this issue.

  • Check Windows and SQL logs.

  • You may be having intermittent network problems. Try setting up a continuous ping test and compare times of any dropped packets to the times you get the timeout errors.
