We made the decision to run it in Simple mode, but I had left it in Bulk-logging while I tried to find a pattern.   I knew that there were some other things that may need to be pulled into a Trans log backup when the DB is in Bulk logging, but I would have never expected it to cause it to be larger than the database itself.  But I guess the large DB and running the reorg job in bulk logging were the root of my problem.
