I experienced this type of error today in SQL server instance.

[298] SQLServer Error: 258, Shared Memory Provider: Timeout error [258]. [SQLSTATE 08001]
[298] SQLServer Error: 258, Unable to complete login process due to delay in prelogin response [SQLSTATE 08001]
[165] ODBC Error: 0, Login timeout expired [SQLSTATE HYT00

Is this memory issue?

I checked one of the db properties.

it had Size = 151899 MB
Space Available = 75.13 MB
Number of Users = 20

Should this of concern?

Anybody can shed some light on this as where to start? SQL instance didn't accept any connections for about 20 minutes
and after that it was fine.

I am on SQL server 2005.

No. But it seems like too much processing going on the server during that time. So, could be CPU pressure as well. But I'm not sure exactly to be honest.

Did it ever go away or did you just put up with it? We have transaction log backups that run every 15 mins when it happens. 10 backups will fail all at the same time and some of them will go to success.

It happens randomly. May be once in 2-3 months. I'm just putting up with it.
