What is MS SQL Server Virtual Disk Interface?

  • Dear Friends,

I was reading about EMC SRDF (Symmetrix Remote Data Facility) when I came across this word "MS SQL Server Virtual Disk Interface (VDI)".

I would like to know much about it & would like to know how SQL Server permits the SAN to replicate the data & log files from one SAN to another using VDI, even when the files are in use on the primary server.

Any help would be appreciated :-).

    Regards,

SQL Server provides an API called Virtual Backup Device Interface (VDI) that enables independent software vendors to integrate SQL Server into their products for providing support for backup and restore operations. These APIs are engineered to provide maximum reliability and performance, and support the full range of SQL Server backup and restore functionality, including the full range of hot and snapshot backup capabilities.

Now I am curious to know why you need to know it. Are you planning to build a product for SQL Server Backups?

  • Hahahahha ... 😀 No I am not going to make any product.

Well, Thanks for the reply Dev.

As I mentioned in my question itself, I was reading about the SRDF solution (used for establishing DR sites)provided by EMC. In EMC documentation, they say they are using SQL Server VDI to copy the data from one SAN (Primary site) to another SAN (DR site). Therefore, I wanted to know how SQL Server is allowing them to access the data files on primary server when the database is in use, as in normal cases we cannot copy the files when it is in use.

I also wanted to know that can we use VDI for same functionality anyway ;-).

    Regards,

    Sujeet
