Remote connection - Connectivity Error 40 SQL 2008 r2

  • I am doing my first setup from scratch running on windows server 2008 r2 using sql 2008 r2 I keep getting instance error while trying to connect name pipes error 40 MSSQL error 3.

I can connect locally and within my network just fine but when I try connect from an offsite location it fails.

--I am using basic port 1433 and have created a port forwarding rule in my router to let traffic in from the outside.

--I have the box checked to allow remote connections.

-- I can see that sql is listen on that port

--It is installed on a domain with the instance name matching the domain name did not use the default instance name.

--Do I need to open any UDP ports to the outside

--I have been able to validate that my IP is resolving to the right address

Anyone shine some light on this it would be assume.. seems like it should be a simple fix ..
