SQL Agent troubles - The system cannot find the file specified.

  • Hi All

    I have a SQL 2005 system.

The SQL Service is started with no issues - However, I can't seem to start the SQL Agent. System error logs indicate: The system cannot find the file specified

I checked the service and I noticed that the Path to the SQLAGENT90.EXE is a location that doesn't exist.

    >> Why would this reflect a location that doesn't exist?

    >> How do I change it to the correct location?

    >> Do I copy the SQLAGENT90.EXE to the location specified?

    Any help would be great

    Thanks

  • Are there multiple instances of SQL2005 installed on the box? (ie are you looking at the correct SQL Agent service?)

Open SQL Configuration Manager and check it there.

What's changed recently on the box? Patch? Failed SQL installation/upgrade? SQL express installed?

Who else has access to the machine? Check Windows application and system logs for changes. When did the error start occuring? Go back in the Windows Security log to see who logged in at that time.

If it has been moved or deleted, I wouldn't trust anything on the box and would reinstall SQL rather than try repair it.

This is a server I inherited so not sure as to what has happened recently

  • I would agree with foxxo, in that a reinstall would be the most simple solution.

However, if you are up for a taking a risk, I recall the location of the SQLAGENT90.EXE path is located in the registry.

A reinstall is not really on the cards right now - I have managed to find the key in the registry where the path to SQLAGENT90.EXE is kept. I have made the change on a test system and it seems to work without any issues.
