I wish that I could have been more help to you.
I had an MSDN subscription but I only have 28 out of the 50 points needed for the Microsoft Partner Status.
I had the subscription but I disassociated with the organization (Total 52 points).
As a result I no longer have all of the SQL Server Editions, although I do not recall that the workgroup edition was included.
If I had authorized copies of the software perhaps I would have been able to help you.
Sorry you had to go through the hassle of started from scratch. Restoring the System Databases, etc... :w00t:
I believe that the edition & license information is stored in the registry. So if you have a legal copy & know what registry keys to change you are not violating a license agreement.
