Datetime2? I agree. Yuck. Why not BigDatetime? We have SmallDatetime...
tinyint, smallint, int, bigint
smalldatetime, datetime, bigdatetime
The simplicity of your suggestion is so elegant it hurts.

Expect a synonymn in SQL Server 201X for datetime2!
