    It is not a "heat map" because that implicitly required clustering - reducing the data values, which is why the Cran R project provides the pheatmap function.
    The image function is a simple 2d plot of the matrix values.

    In the general definition, a heat map is a plot of matrix values using color. There's no mention of clustering.

    "A heat map (or heatmap) is a graphical representation of data where the individual values contained in a matrix are represented as colors."
