Thank you for responding to my question and I apologize for taking so long to reply back. I had to have some emergency foot surgery.I am in fact adding a group as you can see from the attached screen shot.I expect to group to appear on the design surface with the colored indicator and it does. I also expected to see my group in the Group Pane, but is not there. If it helps, I am doing the SSRS exercise in the Stairways.

So that I understand your question correctly... You are expecting to see this:
but instead you are seeing just grey where (group1) and details should be. That is the problem correct?
