SQLExpress is free of licensing fees. If I am in a position that my server performance needs to exceed that of SQLExpress.... Yeah, the 8K is more than justified. By keeping with SQL Server my code will port immediately to Standard, BI or Enterprise when that need arises.

The only way I'd deviate is if I had the need to exceed SQLExpress and didn't have the money.
