    Yes the user account has privileges and also tried the SA account

    SSMS is 2008 R2 - Sql Server is running SQL 2005 !

    Here's a question on that topic though ... what if I changed/modified the MP in SQL 2012 SSMS..... ? would that be an issue ?

    I have 2012 SSMS still installed on my local PC - will try that - just to rule that out.

    You could have problems. Use the same version of Mgt Studio for the same version of SQL Server when creating and maintaning Maint plans.
