Data center outside US?

  • We currently host our own (aging) hardware on site and are considering moving to the cloud. Our consultant suggested a data center in Germany for cost reasons. While there are no legal impediments, I'd like to know anything else I should be concerned with having our data a continent away. The center would host our SQL Server, Citrix farm, Exchange, file system, and BDC. We're told we need to keep the PDC on our premises.

    Thanks.

  • Last time I reviewed some of that stuff, the laws in Germany regarding data were pretty good. But, that was several years ago. Things may have changed and the gods alone know what the EU is up to. I'd suggest a pretty thorough review around treaties and laws regarding data management.

  • Have you considered AWS? We moved our server estate to AWS last year and have found many benefits compared to our previous co-lo hosting.

Apart from better performance and saving about $500k pa, the fantastic flexibility we now have in building new servers is enabling a mindset change in how we look at infrastructure.
