I'm another who missed out on the varbinary(max) part f the answerl. The link provided in the explanation (which I read first as I'm not yet up to speed with all the new features in 2012) makes no reference to varbinary(max) at all but I should have thought about it and realised that filestream is an attribute of a varbinary(max) column. Doh!
