Regarding SSMS: you can install SSMS 2012 and still manage your 2005 server with it.

This I know, but I have to build SSIS scripts and SSRS reports for a SQL 2005 server which is why I need BIDS from SQL 2005 installed. As far as I know BIDS for each version of SQL isn't backwards compatible with a 'Save As' option to save SSIS scripts or reports to prior versions... would've been nice, but since we still run SQL 2005 and 2008 servers I still have to keep each version installed.

I'm looking at installing Windows 8 on my laptop and given SQL 2005 isn't supported on Win 8 I didn't know if this was just MS saying they wouldn't support any problems that may arise even though it may work fine, or if it just flat out doesn't work.
