I work at one of those regulated companies (banks) too...there are no rules that a good relationship can break, hell if my Mother was the DBA she couldn't give me elevated rights...and she says i'm the best developer around.

However, the comment about iterating through a few scenarios and getting better information before actually submitting whatever request you're working on is absolutely true.
