    Production support would include monitoring the backup and maintenance jobs run, and taking corrective actions as required. Also responding to alerts, and escalating to the application DBA's or developers when apappropriate. Running DML scripts in production with the proper authorization. Service pack and hotfix upgrades, and QA after OS and server level patching.

    The division of labor will vary from shop to shop. In a smaller shop, DBA's wear more hats. Even in large companies, there may be autonomous business units who have partial or complete control over their own systems.
