As I approach my golden years I know that what Steve discusses is important but impossible. Whenever one part of life takes up more time another part must give it up.

It is not balance over time that is important. It is balance at any given point in time. One's mental stability and sense of happiness stems from being in balance now.

Very true, but it's both. You want to remain mentally balanced, and overall happy on a short term basis. Maybe not every day, or even every week, but every month for sure.

However you also do want to improve yourself, either in your field or your health/hobby/family, and you make time for those things at different periods in your life. Perhaps you really want to improve your golf game, or really become better at SSRS. That might be a goal for this year, which comes at the expense of letting some other things be less important for a year.
