I think Excel can handle only 256 columns.
True for 2003. 2007 onwards allow 16,384 columns
This makes the solution:
upgrade from office 2003 to office 2007/2010.
We're almost 2012, your current version of Office is nearly a decade old! 🙂
edit: and I'm typing this on my current project where I have Windows XP with Office 2003. I'm such a hypocrite 🙂
