We were trying to do this same thing and never found any work-arounds. There are supposed to be some new Performance Point books coming out later this year. Hopefully at least one of them will address issues like this. From everything I have seen in the tool so far, the ability to format items is severly lacking....
This echoes my experience with PerformancePoint, making any format changes are very difficult and can involve very comples workarounds,
Makes it difficult explaining to a client that they can't add a Vertical Line somehwere or easily change the colours of a pie-chart.
It is a good product and can manipulate data easily but they really need to sort out the formatting side of it, without making people resort to sharepoint css workarounds
