BULKADMIN server role

  • Hi All

I wonder if you can help. Some of my DBOs have requested the ability to use the Bulk Insert command. I have one server with many databases on it, each database has a DBO and they have permissions on their database only so they can't mess things up too much for the other DBOs. I am trying to understand the implications of allowing these users to use Bulk Insert command, as I understand it, the only way of doing this is to make them a member of the BULKADMIN server role. I am struggling to find more information about this role, if I give my users this permission, does it mean they could do something that would could mess things up for my other databases (like accidently import into their database or into the tempdb)?

Thanks, in advance, for your help!

  • I have found the information now, but am posting a link to the article (from this site) that answered my question. The article is old (it relates to SQL 2000) but the information on the server roles is still applicable to SQL 2008.

Excellent article! Thanks again to SQL Server Central!
