Single server environment needs Reporting Services

  • NOT a SQL expert, so please forgive me if any of my questions are unclear:

Small business has 6 computers, 1 server (domain controller).
We recently upgraded from SQL Express to SQL Standard 2017, but when we went to install Reporting Services we were met with the error that Reporting Services CANNOT be installed on a domain controller.

I was told that we could install Reporting Services on a second system (a desktop), but would that require an additional full SQL license? Is there any other option to save the expense?
Also, if we do install Reporting Services on a desktop, can I install ONLY reporting services or do I need another full SQL install?

Finally, (silly question) is there any way that the old Reporting Services (express) could still build reports off of the new SQL Server 2017?

    Many thanks,
    Brady

  • 1.Is it possible to have another server next to the domain controller? Many products refuse to install on a domain controller.
    2. Licensing: SQL Server 2017 licensing guide. Under corebased licensing each server with ms components (like ssrs, db engine) needs to be licensed. Don't know about server + cal licensing
    3. Express & non localhost datasources: not possible see Remote and non-SQL data source support
