My apologies if this is not in the right area but I have a question about a SQL Server instance we have in our 2012 Failover Cluster. I figure this is simply but my research abilities are failing me because I have not found exactly the answer I have been looking for.
Here's my issue. I have multiple instances in our cluster and each instance is also related to a single role in the failover cluster. I need to temporarily shut down one instance because the project associated with it has been put on a indefinite hold but with the idea that it will come back. With that said, I have been asked to keep the instance available to be turned back on if\when the project resumes. My initial thought was that I could disable the services for that instance and everything would be fine. Instead, I have received alerts that this particular instance has met the limit of failover attempts.
After looking deeper into failover clusters, it appears I can simply stop the role in the Failover Cluster Manager and that would prevent the failover attempts. Is that correct? I cannot find a definitive answer. Also, if I stop the role, does it stay stopped until I restart it, even after a system reboot?
