SQL Server 2014 SP3 and SP2 CU14

  • In the documentation for the latest servce pack released last week it states that the service pack includes SP2 CU1 to CU13 and CU14 will follow.  I have an instance of SQL 2014 with SP2 CU14 installed, the company I work for have a policy of appling the latest patches for everything, they will want to roll out SP3 but should I get them to wait for an update to SP3 for CU14 or is it advisable to install SP3.  I've never been in a situation where the client always updates so quickly, I have usually given it a few months after a service pack is released and very rarely did the CU updates on a regular basis unless they were needed.  (although I understand that with SQL 2017 this is now best practice to install all CUs as there will no longer be any service packs!)

    Thanks

Not sure I understand your question here. SQL Server 2014 SP 3 came out after SQL Server 2014 SP2 CU 14. CU numbering is specific the the SP it is applied to, so the next update will be SP3 CU1, not SP3 CU14 (or CU15). If you're company's stance is to always install the latest patch then SP3 would be the "correct" choice.

You can find a list of all the build numbers for SQL Server 2014 here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/2936603/sql-server-2014-build-versions.

  • SP2 CU14 came out before SP3 but SP3 only contains SP2 CU1 to CU13, so CU14 is missing from SP3. My question is does anyone know what the consequences on putting SP3 on a server patched to SP2 CU14, should I wait to see if there is an SP3 issued with CU14 in it as well, I've not been in that situation before so I don't know if this is Microsofts common practice.

  • I have the exact same question. SP3 CU1 is out now, but nowhere can I see whether this contains everything from SP2 CU14.
With previous versions, it used to be indicated in the KB...

Edit: I have manually checked all the listed fixes from SP2 CU14 and they seem to be included in SP3 CU1... So I think it's safe now to install SP3 and then CU1 directly after.

I went ahead in the end and put SP3 on a test and there were no problems at all, it's now in production running fine.
