The Data Industrial Complex

  • Datacentric companies like Google and Facebook are essentially data factories; mining the public space for data and then stockpiling it in massive warehouses. Just like the industrial sector, these companies product waste; either intentionally for profit or inadvertently through neglect. Data that should be secured ends up dumped into places where it doesn't belong, and society suffers from it's ill effects. So, what we need is the digital equivalent of the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) which can proactively search for signs of illegal data dumping and enforce legislation.

  • I really like this topic. I'm also a privacy advocate. It is difficult to understand why so many people are indifferent about companies harvesting, selling, and manipulating them with their personal data. I think this is because of 2 reasons:

    1) Abstract things are harder to care about than real things. We aren't talking about anything physical and that is a tall obstacle.
    2) They do not understand how valuable their data is.

Because of this it isn't immediately obvious to most that it might be a bad idea that a bunch of randos have deep personal information on you and freely share it with 3rd parties. Imagine how much can be extrapolated from your location alone! now imagine having your search history or all your emails or....

There is no limiting principle and the logical conclusion of all this is mass surveillance on a grand scale never before possible.
