Setting up my Home lab

  • Hi All,
I want to setup a simple 2 node cluster environment at home. I want to practice configuring cluster and so on. what is the best way to setup a small home lab where I can try setting up Ag's, log shipping, replication and so on using adventure works/Sample db's. It is just a thought and need your advise. Do I need to by a server? is yes then which model and version is cheaper? Thanks.

  • one way.

get a machine with 16 GB or more -- less and it will crawl.
    install a free esx hypervisor - https://www.vmware.com/products/vsphere-hypervisor.html
    setup 3 VM's
      - 1 - Domain Controller -- better to do it under a domain
      - 2 and 3 - windows cluster with SQL

Nearly all white brand motherboards will work with ESX - normal issue with some is the network drive which can be solved with a cheap 20$ intel card or with a customized ESXi installation ISO. Less common is disk driver - but again custom or pick and choose motherboard will sort it out.
