Best health monitoring tools for SQL Server

  • I am a beginner DBA and I want  advice from experienced DBAs. Which is the best way to monitor the health of SQL Server. I mean, CPU, Memory, RAM, disk usage...
I know that SQL Server has Activity Monitor and Reports but I don't think they are very comfortable, so I'd like to know whether I have to use them, or there exist better 3rd party tools? And which 3rd party or built in tools would you recommend.
    Thanks for your time.

  • Hi,
I am sorry, but there is no best way.
It depends, how many servers, and what is your goal of monitoring. Would you get any kind of alert, if something happens, or do you want  to plan the size of your disk in a view month?
There are a lot of tools, some of them are free to use, the others are expensive.
The sql server  has the MDW, mangemant data warehouse, easy to configure and free to use.
    Best regards,
    Andreas

  • I'm biased because they're my employer, but I heartily recommend Redgate SQL Monitor. One thing that you might really appreciate about it is that we have lots of guidance for people who are either not full-time DBA types or are just getting started. Supports advanced people too, but we specifically target the uninitiated. There's a free eval period in which you can try it out. Or, we have a live monitor online watching this web site.
