I ran a Windows update which was unsuccessful. Microsoft finally got my Windows working again, but now the database service doesn't appear in Windows Services, though the SQL Browser, SQLWriter and SQLAgent do. Fortunately I can start the database from SQL Server Configuration Manager. I would like to be able to do this from Windows Services though. Any ideas on how I can do this? I've already ran a Repair but that didn't solve the problem. My database is SQL Express 2014.

I assume this was working? Was there a service before?

Although the service is set to automatic, I have to manually start the service every time I boot up.

Sounds like an error is occuring at start up. Have you checked the Windows or SQL Server's logs?
