WSFC cluster went offline after a node with no vote restarted, why ?

  • Hi,

    This is a Windows 2012 R2 + SQL Server 2014 configuration

I have a Windows Server Failover Cluster with 4 nodes for SQL Server 2014 Failover Clustering Availability Groups. I have one node in a remote location and that server does not have a vote.

The server in the remote location restarted and my WSFC cluster went down and I don't understand why. I assume that because it does not have a vote means that I can't loose a quorum and/or my cluster.

I wanted to understand  and looked at the Cluster Event logs, I see that my remote server was evicted from the cluster, not a problem. But there is no indication that the entire WSFC cluster went offline. I actually know it because I received an alert from SCOM and as soon as I received it, I went in SSMS and looked at the dashboard  and all servers were gone. Also, my application servers lost connection to the database for a 30 seconds.

    What am I missing ?

    Thank you
