Connect to Server has old server name after cloning VM

  • Hi there gurus

I just want to get the benefit of your experience. I've cloned a DB VM lets say UAT-Something-DB1 and called it UAT-Something-DB2. There are both on the same part of the network.

When I go to Connect to Server for the Database Engine the connection box is always prepopulated with the old UAT-Something-DB1 entry for the server name and I'm often connecting to the DB1 when I want DB2.

Where is the servername being grabbed from, can this pre-population be cleared out to tweaked to DB1? Is there a registry setting or something?

I can't be the only one to have this problem.

  • Don't know exactly where it's stored, but I'm pretty sure it's in different places, depending on exactly which version of SSMS you are using.   Somewhere along the line, I recall there being a way to create a file with SQL Server connection entries that you could import or export, but I don't recall which version of SSMS that first appeared in.   Someone here is bound to know...

  • The connections are stored in SQLStudio.bin file in each users profile path - app data then roaming directory. So it's user dependent. Others have deleted the file but I'm not sure what other unintended consequences there would be. When you see a useless one in the drop down, you can hightlight it in the list and delete.
I think the other option Steve is thinking of is for registered servers- you can right click a group and then select Tasks and Export.

  • Thank you. I think I'll just leave the server list alone.
