SQL server agent (MSSQLSERVER) not starting after system reboot

  • Hi,
We are using SQL2014 for our application on Windows 10 and Windows 2016 systems.  We are observing that SQL server agent is not starting after a reboot.  This issue is not observed with SQL2008 and windows 7 systems.
I have looked at Windows event viewer, SQL server logs but there is no message
We have observed that the SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) service is starting late on SQL2014 and this may be causing the dependent SQL agent service not to start.
    1. Any ideas on what could be causing SQL server service to start slowly?
    2. I expected at least a message in windows event viewer about reason for SQl agent not starting, any ideas on the causes for  no message  shown in windows event viewer?
    regards
    Padma

  • Hi

Under services, please check if SQL Server Agent Startup Type is set to Manual. If you want the SQL Server Agent to auto start after rebooting your server, set the Startup Type to Automatic.

    Hi hope this helps.

    Best Regards

  • Hi,
if your services  has the start up value "Automatic", try to use  the option "Automatic (Delayed Start)"
Maybe you server is to fast to catch all services at startup.
    Kind regards,
    Andreas

  • thanks. We are trying to put Automatic (delayed start) and seem to be working.
