SSRS 2016 History Snapshot

  • Hello,

I am building out SSRS to replace our Business Objects server. In BO, every time a subscription is run, it can be set to store that instance as a snapshot so we can go back and see exactly what it said on that run. Some of our reports have a location parameter so we can specify between our two locations. When run on demand, it is a parameter that I can change. When I set up the subscriptions, I set up two subscriptions, one for each location. Easy to do since the subscription asks for parameter values.

When I look at setting up the snapshot, it doesn't ask me what I want the parameters set to. It just runs for the defaults.

Since the snapshot doesn't allow me to specify parameter values, how can I tell the subscription to store the snapshot? It can even be a system-wide setting so that ALL subscriptions do this.

Please don't get stuck debating the differences between SSRS and BO. We have made this decision based on an annual savings of more than $14,000 by moving to SSRS (and I like SSRS better anyhow).

  • Simplest way to solve it is to have the parameter default to a given location, and then set up a 2nd report for subscription purposes that defaults to the other location.   Haven't seen SSRS 2016 just yet, so I don't know if there's an alternative, but it might be pretty easy to tear this down if you do find a different solution.

  • The subscription isn't the problem. I do have the Location parameter default to our primary location. In the subscriptions, I'm able to select the value. It is the snapshot I can't figure out.

As to this part, $14K isn't a heck of a lot of $$, and can easily get eaten away by delays, additional work effort, and various other things you can't possibly anticipate, associated with SSRS that are not associated with your current use of BO.    You just may not run into them until you're much further along the road.  Mind you, I'm an SSRS fan, so this isn't any kind of assassination of ideas attempt.   Just saying that $14K is a tad weak on savings, and I suspect that if you use the Enterprise version of your SQL Server, data driven subscriptions could save you a ton more.   In fact, now that I think about it, you could easily set that up as your "solution" to your stated problem.   I kinda forgot about that with my first response...

  • Well, $14K to a non-profit is a substantial chunk of cash.

Data driven subscriptions, within SSRS? As I previously stated, the subscriptions are fine. It is the snapshot of what was sent out that I need a way to keep. The snapshot doesn't allow me to specify parameter values. Or, is there something I'm missing?

Man, is my brain going south...   I keep forgetting you're talking about snapshots...   Take a look here:

It talks about how that parameter stuff works relative to snapshots, and might have what you're looking for.

No problem, on this rare search, all Google returns for me is subscription information.

Looks like I need to just duplicate the report with the parameter default set for each location at the report level. Thankfully we only have two locations so not a terribly painful process. I guess I'll submit a Connect item for Microsoft to ignore (last one I put in with a legitimate bug hasn't been acknowledged since I posted it three months ago).

Give the connect item a couple more years - someone will follow up with "Works by Design".   🙂
Seriously though, there might be an item up there about it already as it has been a "topic" several times before. Another option is to have a mailbox that stores them but it is a bit of a mess. If you go down that route, just do a BCC on the subscriptions to that mailbox. Here is another kluge and a bit of a discussion on the issue:
Per user snapshots? Or multiple snapshots for a report each with different parameters at the same time
