I'm looking at moving some of our SQL Servers into EC2 instances on AWS and that includes some distribution databases . We've already identified AlwayOn Availability Groups as our HA solution for our user databases, but have an HA gap for our replication distribution databases, as Microsoft does not allow distribution databases to be in an AG. Out of the box, SQL Server AlwaysOn FCI is not an option due to AWS not supporting sharing EBS volumes between servers (i.e. no shared storage). However, I do see that their are third-party solutions to fill the shared storage gap, such as Sios DataKeeper, and would allow us to set up an FCI. I actually have a proof of concept stood up now with Sios DataKeeper and it seems to be performing well. My question for everyone is, what do you do for an HA solution for distribution databases in AWS if anything at all? What are your fallback options if you have no HA?
