data and log files for test db

  • My company does not have a DBA and the IT manager who typically deals with the SQL Server admin issues is out on vacation. I'm looking into issues with the backups and maintenance jobs failing, and in the process of this I've discovered something that I'm not sure is an issue or not.

We have a large ERP db that has been restored into a DEV db and a Test db. When I look at the properties of both the DEV and the Test dbs, I see that the data and log files are pointed to the production files. When I look at the other dbs that have dev/test dbs, they all are setup the same way.

I know when I personally restore a db that I change the location and names of these files, but I don't know why he did not.

What issues could we have with the dev/test dbs data and log files set to the production files? or is this an issue? Is there some reason why he would not have changed the files?

  • AH nevermind. It looks like it is just the Logical Name that has PROD in it. The actual filename has TEST. That is very confusing when you first look at it and the first column Name doesn't match with the filename. I'm assuming that's fine but it is confusing.
