The sequence to install service packs or hotfixes on an instance of SQL Server that is part of Database Mirroring/Failover Clustering environment

  • Hi All,

Can you please suggest me the steps to install service packs or hotfixes on an instance of SQL Server that is part of Database Mirroring/Failover Clustering environment.

Cluster Environment : Active Node, Passive Node

Mirror Environment : Principle[Here Active Node act as Principle] and Mirror

SQL 2008 server upgrading from SP1 to SP3

As I know I can implement these steps :

    Step1: First stop/Pause the Mirroring

Step2: Apply service pack on Mirror server.

Step3: Once step 2 is successful apply service pack on Passive node and reboot the server.

Step4 : After step 3 is success. Failover SQL instance from active node to passive node [Passive node got latest service pack]

Step5: Apply service pack on current passive node And reboot the server.

--But if any unexpected failover happens from active node to passive node while processing 'step3' what is the issue ?

OR how to stop failover/avoid failover while processing step 3 ....

Please let me know if you need any other details to answer this...

    Thanks Advance,

    Krishna
