Can't reclaim space on log files

  • I have a separate drive just for my log files that is 40GB in size. The total size of all my logs are 1.5 GB, yet I only have 500MB free left on the drive. My biggest log file is only 550MB.

I have tried a shrink and truncate only. How can I tell which log isn't releasing the space? I have had this same setup on this server for over 2 years and this is the first time I have had this issue. Any input is greatly appreciated.

  • If the drive is 40GB and your logs only take up 1.5GB, its not the logs causing the problem, so no need to shrink them.

Ask your server admins to look at the drive, probably hidden files on there, possibly the swap file, which should be moved elsewhere.

  • George,

You're absolutely right! Didn't think of that. I used windirstat and there are some files from the backup client there.

    thank you.
