Quantify Replication Best Practices

  • I have an old server that is struggling with publishing 3 databases and subscribing to 6 others. The more I add the worse disk access becomes.

Is there a "Best Practices" guide that answers such questions as:

How many Publishers and or subscribers are optimal on a single server?

What is the benefit of each Publisher having its own distribution database?

What puts less strain on a subscriber server push or pull subscriptions?

  • Hey..

That's quite a big question...and I'm not sure it has a fixed answer.

IMHO...as bad as it sounds, I think it really depends on a lot of factors...types of replication, amount of data, frequency of distribution etc. You could have a standard server that could publish 10 small databases or one or two large ones.

I do think experience plays a big role here. After working with replication for a while one would start to get a feel of what would be adequate for a particular setup..

    ...horribly vague I know..

What sort of sizes and replication are you talking about ??

  • Just like graeme said, it all depends.

It also depends on how the Server is set up. How many Raid controllers do you have? What kind of speed does your drives have? Are the tempDB, DataDB and the Distributor DB in different drives with separate Channels. You are seeing Disk usage. That is why I gave the pointers regarding Disk set up.
