SQL Server 2005 reinstallation

  • I took SQL Server 2005 of my laptop, now trying to put it back on but it thinks it is still installed. Anyone got around this problem before?

    Thanks

  • I once uninstalled sql server 2005... took me 2-3 tries because there were still some componants installed... Maybe you have a similar problem!

  • If all else fails, perhaps you could install it as a different instance.

  • Yeah, that appears to be my problem but I can't find anything related to the program on my laptop.  Do you remember how you got around the problem?  Thanks for the help!

  • In my case I had to use a few uninstalls because I didn't realise that you had to manually choose all the services to uninstall (like database engine, reporting service...).

So after I had finished the uninstall wizard, I still had a few sql server 2005 objects. I have to rerun the wizard the clean most of 'em. Sorry if I can't offer more information but I hope it points you somewhere.

  • I'm finding when I try to reinstall SQL Server 2005 I have Anaylsis Services, SQL Server, & one other but after I run the uninstallation wizard I can't find any trace of them left.  Is there a way to start the uninstall wizard after the first time?  Thanks for your help, sorry I'm not an IT specialist as am sure you have guessed!

  • I'm not either... I had to stumble my way around this one .

I had to go in control panel, add or remore program, look for anything that looks like microsoft sql server 2005....

The "microsoft sql server" seems to be the master uninstall.  If you stil see if or something with 2005 then you most likely still have something to uninstall.

BTW there are 2 programs linked to 2005 that are actually the install programs.  Even if you were to uninstall them, they would be reinstalled when you restart the installation so don't worry about those being installed (sorry but I don't remember the names).

  • Thanks for all the advice, had got rid of everything that looked like sql, in the end I went into the registry files and deleted all references to SQL - now in the process of reinstalling!

  • , that was plan C .

  • hee hee, plan C worked a treat for a bit - problem though, SQL databases, Reporting services, & workstation won't start.......argh!!!

  • Anyone got a plan D that doesn't involve re-uninstall?
