Installing another instance of sql server

    When installing a second instance, does the services for the other instance need to be stopped?  The installer displays a warning indicating this to avoid a reboot.  Can this and/or a reboot be avoided?

    If I remember right, no. There are some shared files the installer will try and overwrite. You'll have to stop both services when you apply SP3 to avoid a reboot, anyway; it's unavoidable.
