Book by the Authors of this Site

  • Didn't the authors of this site put out a book, something like "Best of SQL Server Central.com"?  Does anyone know?  Also, what other books would be recommended for SQL Server 2000?

    Thanks

Meanwhile I have come to the conclusion, that the only book that's entirely worth reading is Inside SQL Server 2000 by Kalen Delaney. But that's just me.

I do agree that her book is worth having.

  • It's all relative

  • I did find the book by this site "The Best of SQLServerCentral.com 2002".  In addition to this book, I'm also considering books from the following list.  Can you recommend 2-3 books over all others from this list (I do have a personal budget to maintain).  Here's the list, in order of what I will probably buy unless strongly persuaded otherwise...  I'm really up in the air with #3 vs #4.  Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!!

    1.  Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Administrator's Pocket Consultant (Microsoft Press)

    2.  The Guru's Guide to Transact-SQL (Ken Henderson)

    3.  SQL Server 2000 Web Application Developer's Guide (Craig Utley)

    4.  SQL Server 2000:  The Complete Reference (Jeffrey Shapiro)

    5.  SQL Server DTS (Jim Samuelson, M Santos, S Miller, S Hughes, B Sullivan)

    6.  Professional SQL Server 2000 DTS (Brian Knight, Todd Robinson)

    7.  Professional SQL Server 2000 Programming (Robert Vieira)

    8.  SQL:  The Complete Reference, 2nd Ed. (J R Groff, P N Weinberg, L Wald)

    9.  Microsoft SQL Server 2000 DTS Step by Step (Microsoft Press)

    10.  Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Resource Kit (Microsoft Press)

  • #2 definitely, hard not to vote for #6, #7 is good. I'd look for these used, might save enough to get a couple extra.

  • Maybe I should explain myself a bit.

Sure, #2 on your list is kind of reference for T-SQL. Most chapters are very interesting, but some are not...

Actually, I'm waiting on Advanced Transact-SQL for SQL Server 2000 by Ben-Gan, Moreau. Curious what there is to come.

  • To jump-start my SQL Server 2000 library, I have just purchased #1 thru #4 & #6 all online (some new, some used) for a grand total of about $85.  Not too bad.  #2 was $35 of that total.

My next planned purchase is the book from this site.  I figure that since I enjoy this site so much, I might as well support it by purchasing the book.  This site is great!!!

    Thanks for all the input.

  • Both the Guru's Guide (Henderson) and Advanced TSQL by Ban Gan are good books. Kalen's Inside SQL Server is a must as well. For practical stuff, Brian Knight's SS2K for Experienced DBAs is nice. I use that one.
