I have a maintenance plan that gives me the only backup I need; however, I have instructed (mistakenly) a backup to take place using the generic backup menu. How can I stop this redundant backup(s) from taking place?

Should have created a job under SQLAgent that you can disable or delete. Names usually easy to find.

I have used the enterprise manager -> backup database to create the backups (which I am wanting to terminate) which I have revisited, and there is no naming applied to the backup command when you create a new one, just a schedule.......

When I do the schedule option it adds an item to Management->SQLAgents->jobs named like so DBNAME backup which I deleted to stop this schedule otherwise you did not actually schedule, just ran. If not this then maybe I am misunderstanding you.
