An Eventual Consistency Scam

  • An interesting database analogy, but quite apt. It's also good that you stuck to your guns and didn't let them pressure you into action before you were ready. I have always believed in the inherent goodness of people and tended to trust unless proven otherwise, but it seems that grows more difficult as the years have passed. I don't know if it's merely because I'm getting older and more cynical or if that inherent goodness is not as prevelant as it used to be. I'm hoping it's the former and fear for my grandchildren and great-grandchildren if it's the later.

  • It's sad this is the state of the world.

funny enough, I got an unsolicited check for $3k lastnight, saying I'd agreed to an auto wrap program, so I should deposit this and get ready for a schedule to cover a car. I'm sure there's some similar scam, please put a deposit down until the wrap is removed or something similar.

The entire concept of psychology is to help people. It's the sick and depraved who use such knowledge to target the inherent goodness in people, turning a positive characteristic into a targeted weakness. Just like the scams where perpetrators make it look like someone is hurt or in distress and a kind stranger stops to help. The kind person gets accosted and robbed (or worse) for having compassion for others. This causes people to be more fearful of helping strangers who may truly be in need of help. While such criminals make up only a small percentage of the population, it's enough (and growing) to instill fear and a lack of inherent trust in people. That shapes the world that my grandchildren are growing up into.

  • I was subject to a similar scam about 14 years ago. But instead of a check, it was with a Money Order. I've always heard the saying, "A Money Order is as good as cash." So I received it and deposited it at my bank and waited over 24 hours for confirmation. Little did I know, like you said Steve, it actually takes the bank over a week! How lame. So a week later, I get a notice and penalty/fine from my bank for essentially depositing a bad check. I'm like, "How is that my responsibility? Why should I have to pay a fine for that?" Sure, if I were to be doing it over and over again, then yes.

I also filed a police report and an officer stopped by my house for questions. I said I obviously wasn't expecting them to get my money back, but was at least hoping that they could write down the information, and perhaps find similar other cases, and start piecing things together. I asked the officer, "Have you ever seen the movie 'Catch Me If You Can'?" He said, "No." I couldn't believe it. He wouldn't be able to understand the reference and goal I was trying to make. Oh well.
