SQL 2025 SSMS Nonsense

    Yeah, I know this is a 2022 forum, but I don't see a 2025 forum at the moment.

    I downloaded 2025 Developer Standard edition and 2025 SSMS. I right click my database to import an excel sheet and "Import Data" is greyed out. Did my Google-Fu and found out that SSIS needs to be installed for the DTS Wizard to work. So I tried but couldn't. Uninstalled Standard and installed Enterprise with SSIS from scratch (rebooting between each).

    Still no joy. Import Data is greyed out.

    Start DTSWizard from Program Files directory, and there are no Excel Data Source options. Turns out I need to download a driver. So I download accessdatabaseengine_X64.exe and it tells me it can't install because I have 32 Bit Office programs installed. They need to be removed before I can install this program.

    So I download accessdatabaseengine.exe and try installing that. No joy. I have 64 bit Office programs installed and they need to be removed before I can install this program.

    What the freakin' H E double hockey sticks, Microsoft? I can't uninstall my other programs because this is a preinstalled work machine image.

    GRRRRR.

    try and install an older version of access runtime

    and if on your own PC don't install neither standard or enterprise - install developer instead.

    While I agree that might solve the problem, I do not find it comforting that in a world where hackers exploit security holes and MS itself doesn't want people using older drivers or software that my only option is to install an older version of the code.

    We're supposed to keep everything up to date, yet MS has done something with the DTS Import Export functionality that doesn't allow us to do what we need to do because ... reasons.

    That's just bad design.

    I bet this is some poor design/testing on MS' part. They changed something and assumed people would have SSIS installed or Excel. The 32/64 bit thing is likely legacy in some way that creates a conflict.

    Drivers can be such a pain.
