Linux POC - Running SQL on Linux

  • Hi,

    I currently have the pleasure of doing a brief proof of concept around running SQL Server on Linux. I've got it all installed but I just wanted to check a few things if I may regarding the installation process;

    1. The installation I did (following the MS document) installed SQL VNext CTP 2.1 (14.0.600.250). Is this currently the only version available? and going forward SQL 2017/VNext upwards will be the ones that can run on Linux.

    2. The installation also installed Developer edition, again, for now is this the only edition available or could we if we want run standard or enterprise?

    Thanks,

    Nic

    SQL Server 2017 for Linux hasn't been released yet. Therefore the only version is the CTP (Community Technical Preview) version, the latest build being the one you have installed. This therefore is a Developer/Evaluation licence.

    Once SQL Server 2017 for Linux is officially launched, other licensing models will be available. I'm not sure there is any "official" word, but I'm sure I've seen comments from MS employees confirmed there will be a Express edition, in additional to the normal (Standard/Enterprise).

    Thanks for getting back to me on this and confirming that for me.
