Hello Experts,
I am a bit confused about the Breadth editions which is available between SQL 2012 - 2016.
The definition what is available in MSDN talks very closely towards like Regular developer edition as any dev edition we get all the features as available in Production but only think is we can not install in Production servers.
Then how a normal Std/Dev/Enterprise edition is different than the Breadth edition?
If you could share more thoughts would have been helpful.

Breadth Editions
Developer (64-bit and 32-bit)
SQL Server 2016 Developer edition lets developers build any kind of application on top of SQL Server. It includes all the functionality of Enterprise edition, but is licensed for use as a development and test system, not as a production server. SQL Server Developer is an ideal choice for people who build and test applications.
Express (64-bit and 32-bit)
SQL Server 2016 Express edition is the entry-level, free database and is ideal for learning and building desktop and small server data-driven applications. It is the best choice for independent software vendors, developers, and hobbyists building client applications. If you need more advanced database features, SQL Server Express can be seamlessly upgraded to other higher end versions of SQL Server. SQL Server Express LocalDB, a lightweight version of Express that has all of its programmability features, yet runs in user mode and has a fast, zero-configuration installation and a short list of prerequisites.

The what edition? Where does 'breadth' come from and in what context? It's not an edition of SQL

Not sure what is confusing you. The Breadth editions (a term I had not heard until today) are free or low cost editions of SQL Server. The developer edition used to cost approximately $75 depending on where you purchased it. The developer edition starting with SQL Server 2016 is now free. The Express Edition has always been free and is a limited in what it can do.
The developer edition, as stated is used only for development and testing and provides the full power of the Enterprise Edition of SQL Server.
The Express edition can be used for learning and building desktop and small server data-driven applications but is limited in processor, memory, and database size restrictions.
The principle editions (Standard, Business Intelligence, Enterprise) are those that you would use in production environments.
