Linked Server Oddity

  • Hi All

I've been having a bit of an odd problem recently, that I'm hoping you may be able to help with...

I support a data warehouse on a customers server, and every once in a while the data loads will fall over because of a problem with the linked servers it uses. Nothing has changed, and restarting the instance of SQL (2008) fixes the problem.

The restart is generally ok because the customer is 5 hours behind us thanks to the logistics of the globe, so the server is never doing anything other than the data load, but still, its not ideal.

Any ideas what may be causing this? Can linked servers get their nickers in a twist? (There is nothing showing up in the application or system logs on the server)

    Thanks 😀

  • Which provider is used by the linked server?

Unfortunately they can. Take a look at this article and see if you find something of your interest:

    hope this helps

  • Thanks for you reply. Its OraOLDB.Oracle.

  • Thank you Gianluca. Thats a great article.

Unfortunatly I'm not authorised to change the settings of linked servers or the providers as the servers are owned by my customer, but I will send your article onto them in hope that they will try it, and hopefully fix the issue.

Thank you very much for your help.

  • Glad I could help.
