I found "SQL Server 2008 Step by Step" Author: Mike Hotek
Library of Congress Control Number 2008935428
a good read.
Look at this link
http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-SQL-Server-2008-Step/dp/0735626049
Last price I saw was 29.99 + shipping cost.

I wrote a few chapters in the book "Beginning SQL Server 2008 Administration." It covers a lot of the basics. I'd also strongly recommend getting Itzik Ben Gan's introduction to TSQL "TSQL Fundamentals." That's a must read.
