Any assistance greatly appreciated,
Its a new installation on xp sp2, pentium dual core.
It also fails with sqlexpress 2005 on starting the db service on a new install, so then i tried 2008.

This has happened to me as well. I have an Acer laptop. It doesn't appear there is any information on this error on the internet. Maybe it is some obscure corrupted file

I got the same problem before. I browse through the blogs but none of them help me. I restored my PC to factory image and I installed SQL Server 2008 R2 on Win7. It works for me, my best guess is I installed SQL Server 2005 before, uninstalling does not delete all the files or it make some changes in regestry.
I am not sure what is the problem exactly but this solution will work for sure.
