PerMon: Counter Log not starting

  • Hi,

I use Performance Monitor in window server 2003 and add counters to a new "Counter Log". I add counters from the local sql 2000 installation eg "SQLServer:General Statistics\User Connections".

I set the log to start and stop manually.

When I try to start the counter log, I get the following error: "The logname log or alert has not started. Refresh the log or alert list to view current status, or see the application event log for any errors. some logs and alerts might require a few minutes to start......"

    The log never starts.

I look in the application log and get: "The service was unable to add any counters to the tt log or alert. This log or alert will not be started."

I cannot find any information on why my log will not start, I tried on a different sql server we have, and it does the same thing!

How do I get counter logs for SQL Server to run!!?!?!?!?!!?

    Thanks!

  • Hi,

Do you have permissions? At the very least you have to have an NTFS permission to create a file for the log I would guess.

  • I do have rights. I login with a domain-admin account.

I can start logs that do not have any sql related counters in e.g cpu usage. The file writes just fine. Its only when I try to monitor SQL counters that I get this issue.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.
